WOOD TV 8 GRAND RAPIDS -- Husbands, wives, mothers, and fathers came together at Abundant Life Ministries in Grand Rapids Friday for a National Fatherhood Summit.
Religious leaders and politicians tried to inspire attendees to be better leaders in their families. They also outlined proposed legislation that would ensure both parents get equal time with their kids in the event of a divorce.
"The discretion of the court would be somewhat limited in that if there's not a finding that one parent is unfit by a threshold of clear and convincing evidence, then the court's going to work out a shared parenting arrangement which would be in the interest of both children, and more importantly fair, or as importantly, fair to both parents," said Stephan Walker of the American Coalition for Fathers and Children.
The group is also pushing for a federal law that would make it more difficult for the state to take a child away from a parent.
This is the first year for the Grand Rapids event, leading up the national event in Washington, D.C. this summer.
